Eternal Security

Isa 32:17 And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever.

EFFECT', n.
1. That which is produced by an agent or cause; as the effect of luxury; the effect of intemperance.
Poverty, disease and disgrace are the natural effects of dissipation.
2. Consequence; event.

AFFECT', v.t.
1. To act upon; to produce an effect or change upon; as, cold affects the body; loss affects our interests.
2. To act upon, or move the passions; as, affected with grief.

Not everyone who is saved will have assurance.
If you are saved you have it accessible to you, but it does not necessarily mean that you have it.
If you are saved but do not have the assurance of your salvation then it is probably because of 1 of 2 things.

  • Disobedience
    I Jn 2:3
And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
    I Jn 2:5
But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

  • Not treating your Brothers and Sisters in Christ right.
I Jn 3:14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
I Jn 3:16-19 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

When I got saved I received God's Salvation, I was not put on probation until I sin again.

I. ISAIAH 51:6 & 8 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath: for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner: but my salvation shall be for ever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished.
8 For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: but my righteousness shall be for ever, and my salvation from generation to generation.
    A. God's righteousness was given to you at salvation.
    B. God says His righteousness and His salvation are both forever.

II. ECC. 3:14 I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.
    A. God's salvation is just that - His.
    B. We had nothing to do with it. If we did, we would have messed up our part.
    C. Salvation is a work of God to man, not a work of man to God.

III. ROMANS 3:11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

LUKE 19:10 For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
    A. We were not seeking God.
    B. God was seeking us.

IV. JOHN 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
    A. One of the simplest verses in the Bible.
    B. Everlasting life wouldn't be everlasting life if you could lose it.

V. JOHN 3:3-7 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
    A. A baby cannot be unborn in the flesh.
    B. You cannot be unborn in the Spirit, once you've been born again.

VI. JOHN 10:28-30 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one.
    A. If it was my job to hold on to God, then when I fell, I would lose God.
    B. I'm not holding on to God; God is holding on to me.

VII. I PETER 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
    A. You are kept by the power of God.
    B. You are not kept by your power.

VIII. ROM. 5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
    A. Jesus Christ reconciled, or brought us together in friendship to God, by His death.
    B. He keeps us saved because of His resurrection.

IX. EPHESIANS 2:1, 5 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
Col 3:3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
    A. God gave you life at salvation. (Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life.")
    B. God quickened you or brought you to life.
    C. God says you are dead and your life is in Christ.
    D. For you to lose your salvation would mean that you could bring back to life that which God killed, and kill that which God gave life.

X. Ps 32:1-2 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
2 Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.
Rom 4:6-8 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
    A. God says that he will not impute any sin on my record.
    B. How can I go to Hell when nothing bad can be put on my record?

XI. Heb 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
    A. When a Christian does evil (swearing, bad jokes, going into bars, looking at pornography, gossiping over the phone), the tragedy is that they are doing it with Christ, Who said He would never leave them nor forsake them.
    B. When they go into a bar, they drag Christ in there with them.
    C. When they tell the bad joke, they force Christ to listen to it, etc.

XII. Rom 8:15-16 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
John 3:3-5 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
    A. As a child of God, you have two things:
        1. The love and affection of a naturally born son.
        2. The security of an adopted son. An adopted son could never be disowned or cast out of the family.

XIII. John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
    A. At salvation, you become God's son.
    B. Your relationship to God will never change. You will always be His child if you are saved.
    C. Your fellowship with God, as His child, is dependant upon your lifestyle and obedience.
    D. There is a difference between relationship and fellowship.

My name is written in the Lamb's Book of Life and it isn't written in pencil.

XIV. Rom 8:37-39 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.
38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
    A. Nothing can separate us from the love of God.
    B. Salvation and all that is covered in God's plan was the greatest expression of His love toward us.

XV. Rom 3:28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
    A. Conclusion: nothing you do or ever have done has anything at all to do with your salvation.
    B. Question: If you couldn't do anything good to change your position with God before you were saved, how can anything you do bad ever affect your relationship with God after you're saved?

XVI. 2 Tim 2:13 If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.
    A. Even if you stopped believing, "He abideth faithful."
    B. (vs. 12) He may say you never lived like He had saved you to live.
    C. (vs. 13) He could never say, "I didn't save you."

XVII. 2 Pet 1:9 But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
    A. It is possible for a person to actually forget He was saved.

XVIII. I Jn 4:18-19 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.
19 We love him, because he first loved us.
Eternal security is essential because it allows one to serve God because of His unconditional love for them.

One who thinks he can lose his salvation, serves God out of fear of losing it; not because of God's unconditional love for him.
A. This is bondage.
    B. Eternal security is a distinctly Baptist doctrine.
Any denomination that holds to it learned it from the Baptists.
    C. Other religions won't teach this because they want people to be manipulated into staying with that particular religion.
    D. I still have yet to see the doctrine that you can loose your salvation promote holiness in the lives of those who hold to it.
    E. God says that He swoons us and woos us with love.

Jer 31:3 The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.
Rom 2:4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

XIV. Three words used with salvation in the Word of God.
    A. Forever - continually, unbroken, perpetually.
        1. Heb 10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
        2. Heb 10:14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
        3. Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
    B. Everlasting - From this time forth, dealing with permanence and unchangeableness.
Deals with salvation from man's view.
John 3:15-16 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.     C.Eternal - Endless, both ways.
Deals with salvation from God's view.
        1. 2 Cor 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.
        2. John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
        3. Heb 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

How to be saved and How to live a happy life are two different questions.
You can be blessed of God and not be saved.
You can be saved and not have the blessings of God.

It does not require a decision to go to Hell
Anything you have because of what Christ did for you, you cannot lose.
But anything you have because of what you did for Christ can be lost.

Life with Christ is an endless hope: Without Him, a Hopeless end.
Justification is something that cannot be reversed and followed by damnation.

Trying to earn our salvation by our goodness is like putting a drop of perfume in an ocean of filth.
If you can lose your salvation, then who were you trusting in to get it?

Better never to have been born at all, than never to have been born again.
I don’t know I’m saved because I feel good; I know I’m saved because the Bible says so; and I feel good because I know I’m saved.

The salvation of Jesus Christ purchased for a lost world is wonderful in it’s magnitude. It is as deep as fallen humanity, as broad as the compassion of God, as high as Heaven, and as everlasting as the eternal Rock of Ages.
