Dear Praying Friends,
Ye Soldiers of the Cross!
Peter Kim was a charter member at our church and has been my faithful translator for over six years. For several years he has felt God’s call on his life in the area of missions. I recommended him to take some graduate level, sound, local church, Baptist correspondence courses which he completed in a timely fashion. He then taught his own adult Sunday school class in our church for two years, but he still felt led to do more. I began investigating into some other ministries in which we could utilize his gift. I then heard about a unique opportunity to preach weekly on the Korean military bases. The Korean military has very few full-time chaplains; instead they rely heavily on civilian pastors to meet their spiritual needs. There are hundreds of small military bases scattered throughout the country. Many of these bases have no MAN to preach to them. The military does not pay civilian chaplains, and therefore, many “ministers” are not interested. God pity their covetous souls! I was very interested, but I needed a prepared man that I could send! I spoke with Peter about the opportunity, and he eagerly agreed to be our man! Another man working with the military located a military chapel that needed a chaplain. They warmly invited Peter to be their new civilian chaplain. Our church then ordained Peter Kim on the last Sunday of May and sent him out. Peter held his first service on the first Sunday of June!
A Captive Congregation!
The men of Korea must fulfill a compulsory two-year military service obligation. This is normally done between the sophomore and junior years of college. The military service is rigid with very little freedom. The compulsory soldiers can only leave the base on a special permit of leave. Therefore, the soldiers are unable to attend a civilian church. As a result, the bases provide a chapel building and even have scheduled “mandatory religious training time.” Christians go to the designated Christian place, and Buddhists go to the designated Buddhist place. This provides the chaplain with a “captive congregation.” The soldiers do not mind because they are “free” for a few hours and can enjoy the comforts of the chapel building.
Freedom to Preach!
Due to the lack of preachers, the military is not very selective and has few guidelines. The civilian chaplain has complete freedom to preach the Gospel with “no strings attached.” At Peter’s chapel, over 100 soldiers come each week, and there have been many souls saved. I would give you the number, but they did not count. I would estimate somewhere in the neighborhood of 25-30 have been saved in four weeks! Keep in mind that he is preaching to men who come from all different types of churches. Peter’s mission is to get the soldiers saved, trained, and then directed to a fundamental Baptist church upon their discharge. This is a tremendous opportunity that we have to expand our ministry in Korea!
Back at the Home front!
Due to sending Peter and his family out, we have made several ministry changes at church. I have two men in their 30’s that are translating for me now. They both do an excellent job, which also prepares them for future ministry work as well. We added some new Sunday school teachers and further divided our four adult Sunday school classes. The Lord continues to bless, and since our last letter, 73 souls have been saved, 2 have been baptized, and 2 have joined the church.
Thank You!
Once again we are very grateful for your faithful prayers and support. Your support is allowing us to continue expanding the work in Korea. I recently sent a small video presentation of the work to our supporting churches. If you would like a CD, please contact me, or you may view it on our church website at: http://ebc.or.kr/TEMP/Hoffman.htm. There is so much to do here and so few workers. Please pray that God will raise up some more laborers for this needy area. God bless you.
Sincerely,
The Hoffman Family
