DOES GOD HATE THE PIANO?

I have talked to many people that have told me, "God does not want any musical instruments in the church." However, God is going to have harps and trumpets in Heaven. God used harps, trumpets, organs, cornets, flutes, etc. in the Old Testament. If God says, "I am the Lord thy God I change not," and if Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever, then why wouldn't God want them now?

Some people say that God is silent on musical instruments in the New Testament and we should be, also. God hasn't been silent on musical instruments. Ephesians 5:19 says, "Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord." Some people say, "See, we are only to use our voices to sing in church." The Bible doesn't even say that. When you read the verse, it doesn't even mention church, but it mentions "in your heart" and "speaking to yourselves."

The most incredible thing about the verse is what the words mean. If a person looked up the word "psalm," here is what they would find: Strong's Greek Concordance says "psalm" means, "to play on a stringed instrument." Vine's word studies says psalm means, "a striking or twitching with the fingers (on musical strings)." I explained that to a man one time and in his ignorance and arrogance he said, "A PIANO DOESN'T HAVE STRINGS!" It seems like some people have to think they are right even when they know they aren't.

Why make an issue with that? Let's point people to Jesus, show them He is the only way to Heaven, and not try to make issues with things that aren't even issues. God does not hate the piano!

TAKING FOR GRANTED

It is sad how many times we take things for granted. God has been so good to us and has blessed us, but most people take so much for granted. We live in a great country, but when was the last time you thanked God for America? God has given most of us good families, good homes, and good jobs, but we take them for granted. God has given us great friends and caring churches, for which we hardly ever give thanks. The bad thing about taking things for granted is that God will sometimes allow for them to be taken away, so that we will appreciate what we have. If you’ve ever been temporarily without certain things, you will usually be more thankful when you get them back. Many times, after someone has been out of town and visited another church on vacation, they thank God more for our church and realize that they usually took Lighthouse for granted. If you’ve ever had to be separated from your children or spouse, you know that you appreciated them more after you have been reunited. We appreciate and thank God for the rain after there’s been a drought. It should not have to take the absence of something in order for us to be thankful.

God tells us in I Thess. 5:18 that we are to give thanks in everything. If we give thanks constantly to God in everything, we will not ever take God’s wonderful blessings for granted. Why not take some time today and make a list of things that we have a tendency to take for granted, and be thankful to God for those things?

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SUNDAY SCHOOL

Many people think Sunday school is just for children, but it is really for everyone. Sunday school is the time where people can get the individual attention they needs and the small group fellowship. It is a great place to learn specific things about the Bible that apply directly to their life. Because everyone has different needs, there needs to be specialized classes for everyone.

We have a middle-aged couples class, a young couples class, a newly-wed class, a singles class, and even a class for educable slow adults. We already have a class specially for ladies and another one for senior adults. We also have children’s classes for every grade and six teen classes.

Sunday school is a great place to learn, study, grow and become more of what God intends for us to be. Our Sunday school classes start at 9:45 in the morning with food and fellowship for the adults starting at 9:30. I hope you can visit us soon.

TRIVIAL PURSUIT

Trivial Pursuit is a game in which each player tries to answer questions of trivia. It is just a game, and nothing is wrong with that. It is sad, though, when someone’s life is focused on trivial pursuit. When someone’s life is dedicated to the pursuit of things that are trivial, their life is worthless and empty. It is amazing to see how people spend their lives in the pursuit of the trivial because they are looking for happiness. They waste their life on things that are absolutely meaningless and trivial.

In the Bible, Solomon did the same thing. When you read in Ecclesiastes, you will see that he went after everything that was trivial. He went on to say in chapter two, verse ten, that whatsoever his eyes desired, he kept not from them. He spent much of his life in trivialities, and at the end of his life, he said in verse 17, "Therefore, I hated life" When someone spends his life on things that are trivial, he will hate his life and realize he did not find happiness.

Jesus is not trivial! The church is not trivial! The Bible is not trivial! When someone spends his life for those things, he loves his life, and feels fulfilled. At the end of Solomon’s life, he summed up things this way, "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." Wouldn’t we be wise to learn from this early, instead of when our life is almost over?

WALKING WITH GOD

The most important thing one must do to be a good Christian is to walk with God. The most important thing one must do to be a good parent is to walk with God. The most important thing one must do to be anything good for God is to walk with God. The Bible says that Noah and Enoch walked with God. When we walk with God, we will be wise. Proverbs 13:20a says, "He that walketh with wise men shall be wise:" We need wisdom to lead and help people the way we should.

However, if we are to walk with God, we must agree with God. Amos 3:3 says, "Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" If a person is to walk with God, they must agree with God. It is amazing to see how many people talk about having a close relationship with God, and yet don’t agree with God in their life. Have you ever looked at the things in your life to see if God would agree with them? It is something everyone should do.

Walking with God is a great thing, but in order to walk with God, we must first agree with God.

LIVING IN VOMIT

I know this title is not a very nice one, but it is definitely in the Bible. A man in the Bible that ran from what God wanted him to do had to spend three days and three nights in a whale's belly before he was vomited out. Finally, after three days of living in the stomach of a whale, he had had enough and was finally ready to do what God wanted him to do. It is amazing to me to see people that have been living in the vomit of the world for years and still go back to it. The Bible says in Proverbs 26:11, "As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly." There were four or five years of my life when I thought the world had something to offer. The world would mess me up, but I would go right back to it. I am glad that I learned better when I was twenty-one. Some people live their whole life and never realize that.

Every Sunday morning, I preach in the jail. I see guys that get out and go right back to the same thing that got them there in the first place. I have seen teenagers and adults go back to the same thing that has messed up their life. Isn't it about time you learned that living in the vomit of the world has nothing to offer? Serving God is great!

THE SINGLE ADULT

Being a single adult is not an easy time of life. I enjoyed being a child, and I love being married. The teenage years had some rough times for me, but there were still a lot of good times. To me, being a single adult was the roughest time of life. You leave the teenage years and now have all the responsibility of being an adult, but you don't have a spouse with whom to help share the problems and joys. The loneliness, temptations, and burdens can really get to you.

Also, there are many people that are single adults that were at one time married. Now they have all the heartache to recover from after a failed marriage, which usually is accentuated by children or child support.

Because of those and other problems, we have started a singles class at our church. It is a good time to fellowship and learn with others that are going through many of the same problems that you have. It is also a time where we can look to the Bible for answers to help those problems. We have class activities, which are times to get to meet other singles and to still enjoy life. If you fit in the single adult category, we would love to have you. If you know someone that needs a class like this, encourage them to come; or let me have their name and address, and I will invite them to come.

My mom helped me get in a class like this twelve years ago, and that was the thing that started turning life around for me. The class meets at 9:45 every Sunday morning.

THE GREATEST TRUTH

A great preacher, theologian, and Bible scholar was asked, "Of all the truths you have studied, what is the greatest truth you have ever learned?" The preacher didn't hesitate or even pause to think. He immediately started singing, "Jesus loves me, this I know; for the Bible tells me so."

The greatest truth that you will ever learn is that Jesus loves you. He doesn't love us because of us; He loves us because of who He is. He doesn't love us because we are good, perfect or loveable. In fact, we are not good, but are all sinners. No matter what you have ever done, or ever will do, God loves you. God loves us just because He loves us. God loves every sinner. God loved the whole world enough to send His only begotten Son to die on the cross to pay for our sins. Even though He loves us, He cannot allow us to go to Heaven unless we accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour.

The greatest truth you will ever know is that Jesus loves you. Have you thanked Him for loving you? Have you decided to love Him back? He sure deserves our love, admiration and worship.
